The best time to hike the Italian Dolomites

Diane McGuinness European Alps

Nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps, the Dolomites stand as arguably one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world. They’re known for their distinctive jagged peaks, tinted in hues of rose and gold during sunrise and sunset, and consist of 18 peaks rising to over 3000 metres.

With a history steeped in geological evolution and human exploration, the Dolomites are a paradise for adventure-loving travellers. From adrenaline-fueled pursuits, like skiing, mountain biking and rock climbing, to breathtaking hikes through alpine meadows adorned with wildflowers, there’s something to do for everyone. The region’s picturesque villages with charming architecture and rich culinary traditions offer a glimpse into the vibrant culture of the Tyrolean people.

Why visit the Dolomites

The Dolomites are one of the most accessible hiking destinations for travellers looking for a mountain trekking adventure. Located in northeastern Italy, getting to the Dolomites is easy by flying to either Milan or Venice. Dolomites are surrounded by a good infrastructure of roads and even gondolas taking travellers up and down from valleys to access the trails above.

On all our guided trips in the Dolomites we use comfortable private rooms (no dormitories). We use the very best rustic hotels and rifugios, chosen for their stunning location, spectacular mountain views, and wonderful atmosphere. The Italian food served in these accommodations is hearty and delicious and a real highlight.

On our guided walks we will visit some of the beautifully picturesque towns of the area, including Cortina D’Ampezzo, Bolzano and Val Gardena.

What is the best time to visit the Dolomites

The best time of the year to visit the Dolomites is when the European Alps summer hiking season officially starts, which is in the second weekend of June and ends on the second last weekend in September. The Dolomites offer some of the best weather in all of the Alps.

No matter what time you decide to visit this amazing region, we are sure you will love your hiking experience in the Italian Dolomites. Even though the Dolomites receive less precipitation on an annual basis than the majority of the Alps, just remember to pack for all conditions. The daily weather in the Italian Alps can vary dramatically, so come prepared for wet, hot, very cold and even the occasional thunderstorm!

June

If you are hiking in early June on one of our Dolomites treks, you will likely find yourself walking over some snow. Although more effort is required, the views of the snow-capped mountains are spectacular and make for great photos!

Even in late June, on some of the higher passes that we cross on our Dolomites Circular Trek or our Dolomites Traverse there can still be quite a lot of snow underfoot.

July

At the start of July, you can still find soft snow on the passes and clearer trails. You will enjoy seeing classic Dolomite peaks and green mountain meadows, making this a popular time to visit. The beautiful green valleys and pastures are often overflowing with wildflower colours, and the weather is clear and pleasant.

August

As we move into August and the European holiday period, the main towns are busy with vacationing Europeans, the trails are surprisingly quiet, and the weather can be warmer than June or July. You will still need to bring warm clothing as the temperature can vary quite dramatically, even in August. July and August are both peak holiday months in Europe, so you might see more travellers during these months.

September

As we hike into September, the days become cooler but weather conditions are often stable and pleasant, especially in early September. This makes the Dolomites a perfect place to visit at this time.

Events and activities around the Dolomites

The Dolomites are the happy hosts of up to 2000 events each year. They are the perfect location for cycling enthusiasts due to the rugged, challenging terrain. It is a popular choice due to the breathtaking views and fantastic mountain atmosphere. This area is home to several bike races where competitors come from around the world to conquer this difficult landscape. Some of these events are Dolomiti Superbike, Maratona dles Dolomites, Dolomites Marathon and Giro d’Italia.

You might enjoy the atmosphere in Canazei during the Dolomites Skyrace when experienced alpine runners take on the challenge of the mountain pathways.

There is a wide range of leisure activities on offer in the Dolomites. With rock climbing, cycling, orienteering, rafting, skiing and of course hiking in abundance, there is no chance of getting bored!
