On the trail

What's it like underfoot

The first section of the Camino del Norte pilgrimage route covers over 100km from San Sebastian to Bilbao. The often unpaved trail makes its way from the coast to the mountains and back again, so you’ll experience an ever-changing landscape with dramatic coastlines, spectacular cliffs, grasslands and forest paths. Hikers should be prepared to tackle numerous ascents and descents each day, sometimes steep, which are guaranteed to get the heart rate racing. We do recommend sturdy footwear and walking poles as you will encounter rugged trails and frequent ascents and descents, that can be very slippery especially after rain.

Our first but not last Camino! Loved the scenery, food, people and experiences. The hills were harder than we thought they would be BUT the walk was amazing. When we finished we felt and wished we could keep going. All the rooms and accommodation were fantastic.

Customer Testimonials

The Camino del Norte is beautiful and it is very challenging – it was great to not have to worry about finding accommodation or getting our bags transported. The hotel in Getaria was beautiful and we loved the hotel in the hills close to Markina. You did well with the hotel bookings as there isn’t much accommodation along this section of the Camino. The support from local RAW staff was excellent. You need to carry plenty of snacks and water.
