Why Slovenia works so well for a group walking holiday

Amanda Thompson Slovenia

If Lake Bled is the only place that comes to mind when you think of Slovenia, I am here to happily change that!

This tiny Central European nation is accessible, safe, charming and intriguing. Its capital city Ljubljana, where our hiking adventures begin, is vibrant and sophisticated. The country is so compact that you can enjoy the sunshine on the Adriatic Coast and, not long after, be hiking in the Julian Alps. It has all the historical allure of Prague, dazzling alpine scenery to match Switzerland, and cuisine that could give Italy a run for its money, all minus the tourist crowds.

It’s surprisingly easy for English speakers to travel in and its compact size makes it particularly well suited to groups travelling together. It’s for these reasons, and many more, that a growing number of our travellers have chosen Slovenia for a group walking holiday. We’ve seen groups of friends choose Slovenia for annual trekking trips, milestone birthdays and simply as an excuse to get everyone together somewhere special. And it’s easy to understand why. As well as world-class hiking trails, you’ll find top-notch food and wine, wellness experiences and some very cool places to stay. There’s plenty to enjoy together both on and off the trail. Get your friends together and go!

Is Slovenia safe for women?

For groups of women travelling together, feeling comfortable and confident in a destination matters. Slovenia has a strong reputation as a safe destination and is surprisingly easy for English-speaking visitors to navigate. Ljubljana feels relaxed and manageable, while the country’s small size means you can experience very different regions without spending hours travelling between them. For groups of female friends, sisters or women celebrating a milestone together, that combination of accessibility and ease makes Slovenia particularly appealing.

A destination that’s easy to navigate

One of Slovenia’s great advantages for a group walking holiday is its size. You can experience Ljubljana, the Julian Alps, Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, the Soča Valley, wine country and even the Adriatic Coast within a relatively compact journey. That means less time sitting in vehicles and more time actually experiencing the destination together. Ljubljana itself is a wonderful place to begin or finish. Its pedestrianised centre is easy to explore on foot, with riverside cafés, markets, restaurants and Ljubljana Castle all within easy reach. For something special, head up to Ljubljana Castle on the funicular railway. The castle has a colourful history and hosts dining experiences, live music and seasonal events, with spectacular views over the city.

Walking together without carrying heavy packs

A multi-day walk doesn’t have to mean carrying everything on your back. On RAW Travel’s self-guided Slovenia walking trips, your main luggage is transferred between accommodations, leaving you to walk with just a day pack. For groups, this makes the experience much more enjoyable. Everyone can settle into their own walking rhythm during the day and regroup for coffee stops, lunch, a swim or a drink at the end of the walk. Your accommodation is organised in advance, as are the logistics that can become complicated when you’re coordinating a larger group.

From challenging hikes to easier walks

Not every group walks at exactly the same pace, and that’s part of the appeal of choosing the right itinerary. Slovenia offers everything from gentler trails through valleys, forests and around alpine lakes to challenging mountain hikes and hut-to-hut adventures in the Julian Alps. Discover more about hiking in Slovenia, including some of the best places, trails and experiences to explore on foot. The landscapes change constantly. There are dramatic limestone peaks, turquoise rivers, alpine meadows, forests, vineyards and villages, with plenty to see along the way. Choosing the right itinerary for your group’s experience and fitness level is important, particularly if you’re travelling with friends who have different walking backgrounds. Our team can help you work out which Slovenia trip is the best fit.

Food and wine worth travelling for

Slovenia is one of those destinations where what happens after the day’s walk can be every bit as memorable as the trail. Slovenian wines receive plenty of attention for their diversity and quality, while the country’s food reflects influences from its Alpine, Mediterranean and Central European neighbours. In Ljubljana, a guided food tour through the Central Market is a great introduction to local produce. From mid-March until the end of October, Pogačarjev trg square also hosts its popular Friday food market, where chefs prepare dishes from Slovenia and further afield. Wine lovers have even more reason to linger. Slovenia’s wine-growing regions produce an enormous variety of wines, including the orange wines for which the country has become increasingly well known. For something completely different, the historic Vinag Wine Cellar in Maribor extends through kilometres of underground tunnels beneath the city and offers tastings of Slovenian wines. And then there’s Hiša Franko in the Soča Valley. Led by internationally acclaimed chef Ana Roš, it’s one of Slovenia’s most celebrated restaurants and a destination in its own right.

Celebrating a milestone in Slovenia

We’ve helped groups plan Slovenia walking holidays around milestone birthdays, annual trips with friends and special celebrations. That’s where Slovenia really comes into its own. You can spend the day walking through the Julian Alps and celebrate that evening over Slovenian food and wine. Add a few days before or after the walk and you could be dining in Ljubljana, relaxing beside the Adriatic or exploring wine country together. For a beautiful coastal finale, Piran is hard to beat. This wonderfully preserved town has narrow winding streets, Venetian architecture, pastel-coloured buildings and the Adriatic Sea as its backdrop. Seafood restaurants line the waterfront and Italy sits just across the horizon.

Guided or self-guided?

For groups of friends, self-guided walking can provide a lovely balance between travelling together and retaining some independence. RAW Travel takes care of your accommodation, luggage transfers and the practical details of your walk, while you follow the route independently. You’re not tied to a group departure or a guide’s pace. You can stop when you want, take photographs, linger over lunch and enjoy the experience together. For groups wanting additional support or a different style of experience, we also offer guided Slovenia walking options.

Where to add some indulgence

If your group walking holiday is also a celebration, Slovenia has plenty of ways to dial up the indulgence. For centuries, people have enjoyed Slovenia’s natural thermal springs, and today there are spa and wellness centres throughout the country. Adding a spa stay after several days of walking can be a very welcome reward for tired legs. Slovenia’s wine regions are another option. Around the Karst and Istrian hinterland you’ll find vineyards, olive groves and character-filled accommodation. You can even go truffle hunting with a local truffle hunter in Slovenian Istria, combining it with cycling through vineyards and olive plantations. For something more holistic, Slovenia also has an impressive collection of sustainable boutique hotels and wellness retreats where the emphasis is on local food, nature and slowing down.

Planning your Slovenia group walking holiday

The beauty of travelling with friends is sharing the experience. The tricky part can be getting everyone organised. Start by deciding what sort of walking experience your group wants. Are you looking for challenging mountain days or something more relaxed? Is the walking itself the main event, or do you want plenty of time for food, wine and sightseeing as well? Then think about what you’d like to add before or after your walk. Ljubljana is an easy choice for extra nights, while Piran and the Adriatic Coast offer a completely different side of Slovenia. Food lovers may want extra time in the Soča Valley or wine regions, while a spa stay makes a very appealing finale. Our Slovenia specialists can help you choose the right itinerary and work through the logistics for your group.

A country that has chosen a different path

While Slovenia’s popularity and visitor numbers are increasing, the country has deliberately embraced a more sustainable approach to tourism. Visit and you’ll notice how peaceful, green and clean it feels, whether you’re in Ljubljana, the forests, alpine areas or countryside. For a group of friends looking for somewhere beautiful, interesting and a little different for their next walking adventure, that’s a big part of Slovenia’s appeal.
