On the trail
What's it like underfoot
The first section of the Camino del Norte pilgrimage route covers over 100km from San Sebastian to Bilbao. The often unpaved trail makes its way from the coast to the mountains and back again, so you’ll experience an ever-changing landscape with dramatic coastlines, spectacular cliffs, grasslands and forest paths. Hikers should be prepared to tackle numerous ascents and descents each day, sometimes steep, which are guaranteed to get the heart rate racing. We do recommend sturdy footwear and walking poles as you will encounter rugged trails and frequent ascents and descents, that can be very slippery especially after rain.

ACCOMMODATION
WHERE YOU STAY
Accommodation on the Camino del Norte offers a comfortable and character-filled experience. In larger towns and cities, pilgrims typically stay in 3 to 3+-star hotels or boutique-style properties. In rural areas, lodging consists of guesthouses and traditional homes converted into B&Bs, often run by local families. As the Camino del Norte is quieter and less developed than more popular routes, accommodation can be more limited and modest—especially in remote stretches. In some cases, lodgings may be located off the main trail; when this happens, transfers are arranged to and from the Camino to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted walking experience. All accommodations are private and include en-suite bathrooms—a simple yet welcome luxury that allows pilgrims to rest well and fully focused on the journey ahead.
GASTRONOMY
FOOD & WINE
For foodies, the Camino del Norte is the ultimate culinary pilgrimage. This coastal route is famous for fresh seafood, inventive Basque cuisine, and pintxos – tasty small bites served in vibrant bars. With culinary hotspots like San Sebastián and Bilbao, the Norte offers a diverse and gourmet food experience. Whether dining at Michelin-starred restaurants or hopping between local bars sampling regional specialties, this route is perfect for pilgrims craving a flavourful adventure alongside their journey. Be sure to check out our insight article, Guide to the Best Eats in San Sebastián, for top recommendations on where to indulge in the city’s world-renowned culinary scene!
CAMARADERIE
A QUIETER CAMINO
The Camino del Norte sees around 20,000 pilgrims annually. While its popularity is growing, it still provides a quieter, more solitary experience – ideal for those drawn to solitude, seeking time away from crowds for quiet reflection and personal space. Solo travellers should be prepared for stretches with few or no other pilgrims. The most popular section, from San Sebastián to Bilbao, offers the best chance to meet others but shouldn’t be expected.
