Entering the UK from January 2025: Information about the ETA Permit

Leanne Troy United Kingdom

There has been a recent change to the entry requirements for the UK. From 8 January 2025 there will be a new Electronic Travel Authorisation visa system (ETA). The ETA system requires travellers from specific countries (including Australia and New Zealand) to obtain a digital entry permit prior to entering the UK. This streamlined digital entry permit is part of the UK’s effort to enhance border security while simplifying the entry process for eligible visitors.

This is a new process so for your upcoming trip to the UK, so here’s everything you need to know about applying for an ETA.

What is the ETA?

The ETA is a digital permit linked to your passport and will be used for security and border checks. It applies to those entering the UK directly and also for passengers who are in transit, even if they are just changing flights at UK airports.

It will be mandatory for most travellers who previously wouldn’t need a traditional visa for short visits. The ETA must be obtained before you travel.

The ETA is valid for multiple entries to the UK within a 2-year period or until the passport expires, whichever is sooner. It is similar to other systems like the the USA’s ESTA and Canada’s eTA.

Who needs an ETA?

If you are from Australia or New Zealand and travelling to the UK on or after 8 January 2025, you can apply for an ETA now. You do not need an ETA to travel to the UK before 7 January 2025. See more here.

If you are unsure whether you need an ETA, please check the UK Government’s official travel guidance for up-to-date information.

Who does NOT need an ETA?

You do not need an ETA if any of the following applies to you:

  • You have a UK visa
  • You are a British or Irish citizen
  • You already have permission to live, work or study in the UK
  • You are a dual citizen with British or Irish citizenship
  • You are travelling with a British Overseas Territories citizen passport
  • You live in Ireland and are travelling from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man
When to apply

Applications for the ETA must be completed before your trip to the UK. It is recommended to apply at least a few weeks before your travel date, as processing times may vary. The system is designed to process most applications swiftly, often within 48 to 72 hours.

The fastest way to apply is using the UK ETA app. It is available for iPhone7 and newer models, and Android 8.0 and above. If you cannot use the app you can apply online.
How to apply for an ETA

1. Prepare your documents

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity remaining after your date of return
  • Recent digital passport-style photo
  • Payment method (credit or debit card) for the application fee

2. Visit the official UK Government website
Applications for the ETA must be submitted online through the official UK Government platform. We recommend avoiding third-party sites that are likely to charge additional fees.

3. Complete the online form

  • Provide your personal details, travel plans and passport information
  • Answer a series of security and background questions

4. Pay the application fee
The ETA application fee costs £10; similar to comparable systems in other countries.

5. Wait for approval
Once submitted, your application will be reviewed. You will receive a confirmation email with your ETA approval or instructions for further steps if necessary.

How much does an ETA cost?

The ETA costs £10. We recommend allowing plenty of time to obtain your ETA prior to travelling.

How long is the ETA valid?

The ETA will typically be valid for multiple entries over a period of 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Things to keep in mind
  • Transit passengers: If you are transiting through the UK en route to another destination, you may still need an ETA.
  • Entry conditions: Approval of an ETA does not guarantee entry. UK border officers may still assess your eligibility upon arrival.
  • Stay within the limits: The ETA permits stays of up to 6 months for tourism or business purposes. Overstaying can lead to penalties or future travel restrictions.
Why is the ETA important?

The ETA enhances border security and ensures a smooth entry process for eligible travellers. It’s a quick and convenient way to confirm your eligibility to visit the UK, saving time and reducing hassle upon arrival.

By planning ahead and applying for your ETA well before your travel dates, you can ensure a stress-free journey to the UK. Make sure to double-check your eligibility, gather your documents, and use the official UK Government platform for your application.

Safe travels!
