Itinerary

Daily Details

Day 1: Arrive Winchester

Start your journey in Winchester, the ancient capital of England and the gateway to the South Downs Way. Take time to visit the stunning Winchester Cathedral, renowned for its soaring Gothic architecture, and the historic Great Hall – home to King Arthur’s legendary Round Table. Stroll along the picturesque cobblestone streets and follow the tranquil River Itchen, immersing yourself in the city’s literary connections to Jane Austen and John Keats. Winchester’s vibrant food scene offers everything from fine dining to upmarket tearooms. For gin lovers, the Bombay Sapphire Distillery is just a short drive away. Enjoy the perfect blend of history, culture, and cuisine before setting off on the South Downs Way adventure.

Day 2: Walk Winchester to Exton (19km)

Begin your walk through a patchwork of sweeping fields, immersing yourself in the tranquillity of the South Downs countryside. Stop for a morning break at the charming hamlet of Chilcomb, where you can take a short detour to visit St. Andrew’s Church, a hidden gem older than Winchester Cathedral itself. The trail leads you towards Beacon Hill, the smaller of two on the South Downs Way, where you’ll be rewarded with great views of the surrounding hills. In centuries past, warning beacons were lit here to alert against approaching invaders. As you descend the ridge, you’ll cross the serene River Meon and arrive in the postcard-perfect village of Exton.

Day 3: Walk Exton to Buriton (23km)

Leaving Exton, you’ll ascend Old Winchester Hill, a stunning grassy landmark teeming with wildflowers such as bellflowers, wild thyme, and orchids. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it features the remnants of an impressive Iron Age hill fort and visible Bronze Age barrows. As the trail continues, you’ll tackle the climb up Butser Hill, the highest point in the South Downs at 270m. The effort is rewarded with sweeping views that make it a highlight of the day. From there, descend into the tranquil woodlands of Queen Elizabeth Country Park, where a visitor centre and café provide a perfect spot to recharge.

The route meanders through peaceful forest paths before bringing you to the charming village of Buriton, known for its historical ties to John Goodyer, one of Britain’s most renowned botanists, whose unmarked grave lies in the churchyard.

Meals: B

Day 4: Walk Buriton to Cocking (19km)

Today you walk along the top of the escarpment through shaded woodlands, offering a serene atmosphere with limited views. You may want to take a short detour to South Harting, where you can stop for refreshments or explore the historic St. Mary and St. Gabriel’s Church, renowned for its beautiful stained glass windows and statue of the Archangel Gabriel.

As you continue, you’ll reach the second Beacon Hill of the journey, where the woodland thins and expansive views open up, revealing ever-changing rolling fields stretching into the distance. The trail passes near the intriguing Monkton Estate, famously linked to surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. While the house itself remains hidden, keep an ear out for the peacocks that live on the estate.

Just before Cocking, you’ll encounter a striking artwork by renowned environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy – the Chalk Stone Boulder. This large chalk boulder is split into two halves, with the trail winding between them. Truly a day full of unique experiences, surprises, and striking views!

On the trail

What's it like underfoot

The trail is well-maintained underfoot with a mix of walking surfaces, including chalk and pebble paths, soft grassy tracks, and woodland trails. Walkers will also experience quiet farm tracks that can sometimes turn muddy, especially after rain. Some paths contain flint, which is embedded in the ground or mixed with the chalk. The flint can be scattered, or it can be more concentrated, depending on the section of the trail Good boots are recommended for these harder sections. There are also occasional paved sections along leafy country lanes and roads leading into towns and villages.
