Camino Self-Guided: Walk in a Group or On Your Own?

Liz Crouch Camino

If you’re exploring RAW Travel’s Camino options and wondering which style suits you best, you’re not alone. Whether you crave the freedom to explore independently or the camaraderie of a group, we offer two fantastic self-guided options to suit your style. Our highly sought-after Camino trips feature quality accommodations, luggage transfers, thoughtful planning and expert advice.

Read on to discover the key differences between our individual itineraries and group trips – and find out which one is right for you!

Group trips vs individual itineraries: What’s the difference?

With our individual Camino itineraries, you have the freedom to choose your own departure date and customise your walking days to suit your preferences, depending on trail availability. Enjoy the freedom to walk your Camino, your way!

This option is ideal for travellers who:

  • have a specific date and duration in mind for their trip
  • prefer travelling solo or with their own group and value independence
  • want to tailor their itinerary to match their own pace and preferred daily distances (with the understanding that some sections may have fixed distances due to limited services)

☝️ Important: If you’re a solo traveller booking an individual itinerary, a single supplement (or sometimes a solo traveller surcharge) will automatically apply, as there’s no option on individual itineraries to be paired with another RAW Traveller.

About our self-guided Camino group trips

If you’re looking for a bit more structure but still want the freedom of self-guided walking, our group trips are an excellent choice. Traveling in small groups of 8 to 10 people, you’ll follow a fixed itinerary with scheduled departure dates. While the core itinerary can’t be modified, guests can add extra nights at the beginning or end of the trip to better align with their personal travel plans.

This option is ideal if you:

  • enjoy the social side of travel and want to share the journey with like-minded people
  • are a solo traveller looking to save costs by sharing a room (we’ll pair you with a traveller of the same sex)
  • value community spirit and connection along the trail
  • want a supportive environment – perfect for those new to multi-day hiking and looking to build confidence on the trail

Bonus tip: On less-travelled routes like the Portuguese Camino or the Camino del Norte, joining a group can be especially helpful. These trails often have fewer services and less foot traffic, so having a group provides extra support, confidence, and companionship.

Why our group trips are so popular

Joining a RAW Travel self-guided group trip means becoming part of a diverse, friendly community of fellow pilgrims. Everyone walks at their own pace and brings their own personality to the experience – so patience, flexibility, and mutual respect are key to making the journey enjoyable for everyone.

Our group trips include several added benefits that aren’t part of our individual itineraries, including:

  • upgraded stays in select locations (e.g. the iconic Parador in Santiago)
  • a welcome meet-and-greet with our local team
  • access to our exclusive Group Trip Facebook page to connect with fellow travellers before departure
  • special surprises and thoughtful extras along the way.

Guests can choose to stay in a twin-share room, where you’ll be matched with another traveler of the same sex, making you eligible for the twin-share rate. If you’d prefer your own space, you can request a single room for an additional single supplement fee. Please note that single rooms are limited and tend to book out quickly.

While it’s a group trip, you’re not expected to be together all the time. Think of it as a buddy system – walk your own pace during the day, then reconnect with the group in the evening to share stories, laughs, and reflections. You can choose to be together when you want, while still enjoying the freedom to take space when you need it.

This flexible approach lets friendships develop naturally and creates a warm, social atmosphere along the Camino.

Which style is right for you?

Individual Itineraries are perfect for travellers who value independence, flexibility, and the freedom to create their own schedule. Whether you’re walking solo or with friends, this option puts you in the driver’s seat. Individual itineraries are also available on all Camino routes, giving you a wider range of destinations and departure dates – whereas group trips are only available on select trails.

Group trips are ideal if you enjoy the social side of travel and want to share your Camino experience with others. They’re especially great for:

  • solo travellers looking to save money by sharing a room
  • those who value connection and community along the trail
  • first-time walkers seeking the support of a small, friendly group.

Group travel adds a layer of encouragement and camaraderie that many pilgrims find deeply rewarding.
