Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Best Time to Visit?
The Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage season runs from July to mid-September, when all three sacred mountains – Haguro, Gassan and Yudono are open. Our tour begins in mid-September, a beautiful transitional time as the alpine meadows of Mount Gassan start showing the first hints of autumn. Trails are quiet, temperatures are mild and the weather remains favourable for walking. This period captures the serene beauty of the mountains before the higher peaks close for winter, offering a spiritually rich and visually stunning experience.
What is the difficulty level of the hikes?
The trails across the three sacred mountains vary. Haguro is gentle, with cedar-lined paths ideal for most fitness levels. Gassan features steeper alpine sections, while Yudono includes uneven terrain and spiritual sites. Your guide will tailor the pace to the group’s experience and ensure a safe, enjoyable journey.
How physically demanding is the journey?
Pace is moderate and adjusted for the group. Daily hikes range from a few kilometres on easier trails to more challenging alpine sections.
What accommodation can I expect?
Accommodations are carefully selected for comfort and authenticity, ranging from traditional ryokan with tatami rooms and hot springs to boutique lodges near trailheads. Your guide ensures smooth check-ins and a relaxing place to rest each evening.
Are there cultural or spiritual etiquette rules?
Yes. Visitors should show respect at temples, shrines and sacred springs, follow the guidance of your guide, maintain quiet and observe any photography restrictions. Participating in local rituals is optional but encouraged for a deeper experience.
