Day 1: Arrive Jodogahama Beach
To reach Jodogahama Beach in Miyako you can take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Morioka Station (approx. 2 hours), then either a highway bus (approx. 2 hours) or the Yamada train Line to Miyako Station. From Miyako Station, buses run to Jodogahama, twice hourly (journey time 20 to 25 minutes).
Jodogahama Beach, located just outside Miyako City, is one of the most picturesque spots along the coastline. The name “Jodogahama” translates to “Pure Land Beach”, a reference to its serene beauty. The beach features a stunning white pebble shoreline, crystal-clear waters and a sheltered inlet, making it one of Japan’s top beaches and swimming destinations.
Enjoy exploring the area after you’ve checked in to your accommodation. The nearby Visitor centre is worth a visit, or perhaps you may like to take a boat ride along the coastline or a walk to the viewpoints overlooking the beach..

Day 2: Jodogahama Beach to Yamada (10-11km / 5 hours)
This morning begins with a transfer to Omoe Fishing Port, tucked into the rugged beauty of the Omoe Peninsula. From here, set off on a rewarding coastal hike that steadily ascends to the highest point of the day – around 100m in elevation – offering panoramic views of the dramatic coastline and endless Pacific horizon.
As the trail meanders, you’ll pass the peaceful stretch of coastline before entering a tranquil forest path. This shaded section brings you to the dramatic headland of Cape Todogasaki, the easternmost point of Honshu. Here, take time to enjoy a well-earned rest, savour your lunch and visit the striking white lighthouse that marks this symbolic location. The views over the ocean from this vantage point are truly unforgettable.
Continuing along the Michinoku Coastal Trail, enjoy sweeping vistas of Aneyoshi Fishing Port before descending gently toward Aneyoshi Campground, a quiet spot nestled near the sea.
A pre-booked taxi will then transfer you to your accommodation in the coastal town of Yamada. Set between forested hills and calm bays, Yamada is known for its fresh seafood – especially oysters and sea urchin – and offers a peaceful, authentic glimpse into Tohoku’s maritime culture.
Meals: B, D
Day 3: Yamada to Kamaishi | Ushikorobashi loop walk (14.5km / 5-6 hours)
This morning, you’ll set off on a scenic train ride from Yamada to Iwate Funakoshi Station, where a memorable day on the Michinoku Coastal Trail begins. Your journey takes you along the striking Ushikorobashi Pass, a trail rich in both natural beauty and local folklore. Its name, meaning “the cow that falls over”, comes from the ridge’s quirky, sloping shape – an early hint at the character of the landscape ahead.
The trail ascends gradually but steadily, with a series of steps leading you through lush forest and up to a dramatic viewpoint just under 300m high. From here, soak in breathtaking 270-degree views across the bay, a well-earned reward for your efforts. This section is a perfect mix of challenge and serenity, making it one of the most rewarding stretches of the trail.
After catching your breath at the top, the descent winds down toward a small beach, a perfect spot to have some lunch before heading up through some more forested areas and finally down to the Aragami Swimming Beach, a peaceful cove known for its beautiful white sandy beach and nearby shrine that lends a quiet, spiritual charm. Take time to relax, dip your feet, or simply enjoy the tranquil coastline.
From Aragami, return on foot to Iwate Funakoshi Station, taking a short train ride to Unosumai. A quick shuttle brings you to your comfortable accommodation in Kamaishi for the evening.
Meals: B, D
Day 4: Kamaishi to Ofunato | Hike Kuwadai Pass (10.6km / 4 hours)
After breakfast, your host will shuttle you back to Kamaishi station. You can pick up a packed lunch at Kamaishi station before jumping on a train headed for Tōni. After a scenic train ride to Tōni Station, you begin your hike along a peaceful forested section of the Michinoku Coastal Trail. This stretch follows part of the historic Hama-kaido, once a vital trade route linking the inland city of Sendai with the coast. In the Edo Period, goods such as salt, seafood and iron flowed along this path under the watch of the powerful Date clan.
The trail climbs steadily through the woods, weaving up a series of switchbacks to the 400m-high Kuwadai Pass, where you can pause to enjoy lunch. From there, you’ll descend into the village of Yoshihama, wisely relocated to higher ground after the 1896 tsunami – a decision that saved it in 2011.
After your day’s hike, you’ll take a train ride to Ofunato, where you settle in for the night, perhaps with a restorative soak in the onsen.
Meals: B, D
Day 5: Ofunato to Rikuzentakata | Hike the Goishi Coast (14.5km / 5 hours)
Departing Ofunato this morning, you’ll take the local bus a short distance to Hosoura Station and from here you’ll commence today’s hike.
The hike from Hosoura station to the Anatoshi-iso rock takes you along the road up through the quaint fishing village of Hosoura to the forested area around Anatoshi-iso.
You’ll start your hike on a path taking you through dense forest, making your way towards the beautiful Goishi Coast. The trail is mostly easy, with gentle climbs, the highest reaching just under 100m. As you pass through pine and cypress trees, you’ll encounter several scenic vantage points offering stunning views of the coastline. The clear blue and turquoise waters of the Goishi Coast, contrasting with the grey rocks and lush greenery, create an idyllic setting for the hike.
One of the highlights of the day is Anatoshi-iso Rock, known for its three natural arches shaped by the ocean. Further along, the Goishi Kaigan Information Centre provides a great place to rest, with facilities including a campground and observation deck. From here, you’ll also encounter Kaminari-iwa, a towering rock that makes a loud noise when waves crash against it, earning its name from the Japanese word for thunder.
The trail continues past Goishihama Beach, famous for its black and white pebbles. From Goishikaigan-guchi station, you’ll take a local bus to Rikuzentakata, your rest point for the evening.
Meals: B, D
Day 6: Rikuzentakata to Kesennuma | Hike Hirota Bay (8km / 3-4 hours)
Your day begins with a local bus ride to Otomo Station, the starting point of your hike. From here, you’ll embark on a scenic walk along the Hirota Bay course, a tranquil coastal trail known for its serene waters, rugged shoreline and peaceful atmosphere.
The route begins with some road walking, leading you toward the midpoint of the Michinoku Coastal Trail. As you walk, you’ll pass through charming fishing villages and lush forested areas, gradually leaving the bay behind and entering a mountainous section of the trail. Along the way, you’ll encounter two picturesque beaches – perfect spots for a rest, photos, or simply soaking in the view.
Continuing onward, the trail leads you to the Kurosaki Lookout, a stunning viewpoint offering expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding coastline. Nearby is Kurosaki Senkyo Onsen – a peaceful onsen facility nestled in the hills. This is an ideal spot to enjoy a local lunch and a soothing hot spring bath. Note: Kurosaki Senkyo is closed on Wednesdays.
This afternoon, a private taxi will transfer you to Kessenuma Oshima, a scenic island just off the coast.
Your day ends on Kessenuma Oshima, where you can unwind and enjoy the natural beauty and quiet charm of this island community, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and traditional fishing villages.
Meals: B, D
Day 7: Kesennuma Oshima Island (16km / 5 hours)
Today offers a rich and rewarding exploration of Kesennuma Oshima. As you follow the Michinoku Coastal Trail across the island, you’ll encounter a variety of landscapes – from dramatic rocky shores to quiet beaches and lush woodland paths.
Along the way, take time to enjoy a break at the Kesennuma Oshima Welcome Terminal, where you can try the island’s famed Yuzu ice cream, sip on a coffee, or perhaps browse locally made goods that reflect the character of the community.
Highlights of today’s walk include the striking cliffs of Cape Tatsumaizaki, where waves crash powerfully against the rocks in a display likened to dancing dragons; the calm, clear waters of Kodamahama Beach, perfect for dipping your toes or taking in the peaceful scenery; and the gentle forested climb to Mt. Kameyama, the island’s highest point. At the summit, you’ll find Oshima Shrine, a sacred site tucked into the trees and believed to protect the island’s people and lands.
Meals: B, D
Day 8: Depart Kesennuma
Your trip ends this morning in Kesennuma Oshima. The hotel shuttle will transfer you to Kesennuma Station. From Kesennuma station, you can then take a train to Sendai via Ichinoseki. You may like to extend your time in Senda or from here, the Hayabusa Line is the best option heading south to Tokyo – a journey of 2 hours and 15 minutes.

On the trail
Hiking the MCT
The central section of the Michinoku Coastal Trail offers hikers a rich mix of terrain, shifting from sandy beaches and rugged rocky coves to forest paths and rural village roads. Expect a variety of surfaces, from paved stretches to uneven dirt tracks, boardwalks and tree-lined trails. While elevations remain relatively low—generally between sea level and 400 metres—the trail’s character is defined by frequent climbs over headlands and descents into fishing hamlets. These rolling ups and downs, often involving stairways or steep forested slopes, create a rewarding yet moderately demanding hiking experience along the coastline. Read more in our Guide to Michinoku.
