The Swiss Alps summer hiking season officially starts in mid-June but July is the real beginning of the hiking season. It winds down in late September but officially finishes in early October.
No matter which month you decide to visit this amazing region, we are sure you will love your Swiss Alps trekking experience.
Switzerland is considered to have a fairly mild climate overall, but nowhere has more changeable weather than in the mountains. The weather changes according to the seasons, location and elevation. While the sun is shining in one valley, there might be rainfall in the next.
Just remember to pack for all conditions – come prepared for wet, hot and very cold! We also recommend regularly checking the local weather conditions while you are in Switzerland since they are ever-changing.
Hiking Switzerland in June
If you are hiking the Swiss Alps early in the season on one of our Swiss Discovery Treks, you will likely find yourself walking over snow. There are often warm sunny days down in the valleys but up in the mountains, the snow is still melting.
Hiking Switzerland in July
At the start of July you will find soft snow on the passes and clearer trails. Wildflowers are usually in full bloom for the duration of July making this a popular time to visit. July is also one of the warmest months making this a popular time for trekking the Swiss Alps.
Hiking Switzerland in August
As we move into August and the European holiday period, the main towns are busy with vacationing Europeans but this is still one of the best months with the warmest weather. Conditions are more likely to be dry and warm at this time. You might still enjoy seeing some wildflowers scattered across the countryside.
Hiking Switzerland in September
Summer might be technically over but September will still offer some of the best and clearest weather Switzerland has to offer. At this time you can typically enjoy less rain and more stable weather patterns. At higher elevations, you might enjoy some autumn colours with the larches turning their golden colour. The summer tourists have often left, offering quieter trails.
