Getting to and from your Tour du Mont Blanc trek
A practical travel guide for walkers
The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the world’s great walking adventures, and for good reason. Circling Western Europe’s highest mountain, this iconic alpine circuit winds its way through France, Italy and Switzerland, delivering ever-changing views of glaciers, high mountain passes and traditional alpine villages.
Covering approximately 170 kilometres, the route follows ancient trading paths once used by farmers, merchants and mule drivers. Today, it remains a rewarding physical challenge and a deeply memorable walking experience.
Because the Tour du Mont Blanc crosses international borders and spans a large alpine region, travel logistics can feel complex at first. With some forward planning though, getting to and from the trail is straightforward. This guide explains the best ways to reach Chamonix, the starting point for RAW Travellers, and outlines transport options at the end of your trek.
Best airport for the Tour du Mont Blanc
Geneva Airport (GVA)
Geneva Airport is the most convenient and cost-effective international gateway for the Tour du Mont Blanc. It is the airport used by the majority of walkers and the preferred arrival point for RAW Travel itineraries.
From Australia, flights to Geneva typically take around 21 to 25 hours depending on your departure city and stopovers. Most routes involve one or two connections, with a wide range of airlines servicing the route.
Getting from Geneva Airport to Chamonix
RAW Travellers begin and finish their trek in Chamonix, and there are several reliable transport options from Geneva Airport.
Shared or private airport transfers
For the most seamless option, many walkers choose a pre-booked airport transfer service between Geneva Airport and Chamonix.
- Travel time is approximately 80 minutes
- Faster and simpler than public transport
- Door-to-door service
- Must be booked in advance
- Prices start from around €30 per person, each way
This option is ideal after a long-haul international flight or if you want the least amount of hassle on arrival.
Coach services from Geneva to Chamonix
Several long-distance coach companies operate between Geneva Airport and Chamonix, including Swiss Tours, BlaBlaCar Bus and Flixbus. Rather than comparing providers individually, we recommend using a bus comparison website such as Busbud or Omio to view schedules and prices in one place.
When booking, make sure you select Geneva Airport as your departure location, not Geneva city centre, unless you are staying overnight in the city.
Most coaches arrive at Chamonix Sud bus station. From here, it is around a 15-minute walk to our base hotel, or a short ride on the local bus network.
Train travel to Chamonix
Train travel from Geneva Airport to Chamonix is possible, though it involves multiple connections. The journey typically includes a change at Geneva Cornavin station and another at St Gervais-les-Bains, before continuing on to Les Moussoux, which is close to our hotel.
Train timetables and tickets can be checked via the Swiss rail network website. As the journey crosses an international border, tickets may be issued in two sections, which is normal.
Train tickets are usually available for booking around three months in advance.
