Best Restaurant in Kyoto

Zoe Rees Japan

This wonderful restaurant in Kyoto is famous for its delicious ramen and gyoza. They opened their first restaurant in 1985 in Fukuoka and can now be found in many locations around the world including New York and Sydney. The Kyoto restaurant is in a fabulous location, close to the Nishiki food market and not far from the famous Gion district.

You can’t prebook and it is popular so you might have to wait (don’t be put off if you see a line out the front, it’s worth the wait!). I would recommend going early to avoid the dinner rush. The seating is bar style so if you go in a larger group you might need to sit separately. Once you taste the ramen you will see why people are willing to wait! The broth is rich and delicious, the noodles are just the right texture.

The ramen is not overdone, simple but delicious. I like the traditional ramen. They have a great set menu for around 1500 yen, which includes ramen and gyoya. During my recent visit, I only had a few days in Kyoto but I loved it so much I went twice. The gyoza come with their homemade chili and lemon paste on the side – delicious! You can even buy this buy the bottle to take home.

The free iced tea and energetic friendly staff are a nice touch too.
