If you’ve ever wanted to experience luxury on a long-haul flight, our Flights Specialist Rosalind highly recommends flying Business Class with Oman Air, not least because it costs about half the price of the other Emirate airline carriers…

What I loved about flying Business Class with Oman Air

The Route: Muscat–Paris (7 hours) / Manchester–Muscat (7 hours)

Oman Air offers an incredibly high standard of service, from the minute you board the plane. There is an eye-popping amount of space in the biggest seat you’ll probably ever see in Business Class! When it converts into a bed the comfort level increases to a whole new level. This is an amazing way to fly. None of that cramped feeling and aching back from being crumpled up. The storage is great too – plenty of space for books, bottled water and other essentials. Your PJs and slippers stay tucked away in the little locker in front of you.

All meals are ‘dine anytime’, so if you want to sleep first and eat later or vice-versa, you can.

The bathrooms aren’t overly big, but roomy enough to get changed and sample some of the beautiful toiletries from an Omani brand called Amouge (this is the brand in your kit, but it’s always nice to use what’s on offer before cracking into said kit).

Tuck yourself in for a restful sleep and when you awake you’ll be offered a hot beverage and small snack before your next beautifully presented meal arrives.

When you get to Muscat you’ll make your way through the newest airport on the block. This place is pristine! Signage is thoughtful and the concourse is easy to navigate. Up the escalator is the lounge and AeroHotel area where you can enjoy a beautifully appointed hotel room for 6 hours from just US$117.

I headed for the First & Business Class Lounge and was warmly welcomed into a world of opulence and sophistication. For me, the real winner of this lounge is the sleeping quarters. There are dedicated curtained-off pods where you can stretch out and rest, or you can choose your own sleeping room! I was cocooned in a dark, quiet space and enjoyed a blissful 4-hour snooze on a comfortable bed.

What a way to start a RAW Travel walking adventure!

Lounge access

The luxurious First & Business Lounge at Muscat Airport is one of the largest I have ever seen, with two expansive dining areas (offering food from all over the world, and tea and coffee aplenty), plus showers, ample workstations, lots of seating (singles, twos and fours), lounges and sleep rooms. The spa is due for completion in October 2018.

A 2-2-2 configuration is a welcome sight. Oman Air has mastered the art of direct aisle access for all passengers. Window seats are tucked away and a privacy screen closes you off. You can easily stretch your legs in the mini corridor without disturbing anyone.

You won’t go hungry on these flights. Once seated, you’re served a welcome glass of champagne plus a delicious date and a small Arabic coffee. The brown leather-bound menu is a nice touch, as is the crisp tablecloth laid out for every service – breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts and snacks.

The movie and TV selection is huge (as is the screen): new releases, classic Hollywood, sitcoms, documentaries, lifestyle, plus short infomercials about Oman. The music selection is also impressive; I chose the ‘sleep sounds’ and when I extend my seat into a bed I easily drifted off to sleep.

Onboard experience

Attentive and hospitable. With one crew member for every four passengers, service is prompt and friendly. Champagne flutes are regularly topped up. Pyjamas and slippers are delivered by a crew member, along with an impressive inflight amenity kit.

With Oman Air you fly in conjunction with Malaysian Airlines, Etihad or Thai Airways out of major Australian airports via that airline’s hub, then onto Muscat, then to your destination of choice. You can stopover in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Abu Dhabi or Muscat.

Return flights from Melbourne cost from $4324 (subject to availability). Sydney from $4464, Brisbane from $4438, Adelaide from $4470, Perth from $3415.

Best for walking the…

Note: We’d love to help find you a great deal on an international flight, but please note that we only offer this service to clients who have booked one of our walking trips.

Value for Money

Score: 8/10

Oman Air usually costs around half the price of the other airlines that fly via the Middle East on to Europe. And going via the Middle East is usually the quickest way to the start of your RAW Travel walk.
