The Larapinta Trail is considered one of the best wilderness walks in Australia, traversing the West MacDonnell Ranges. The rugged rocky outcrops form a striking backdrop to scenic paths that cut a swath through scenic gorges and expansive plains. We camp at night under the stars beneath sentinel gum trees and absorb the ambience of the stark Australian outback. We have chosen walks along the best sections of the trail. A highlight is a challenging but rewarding climb up to the top of Mount Sonder (1,380m), where we enjoy fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, plains, valleys and salt lakes before returning to Alice Springs.
The Larapinta trail, although only a few years old is fast becoming one of the World's great walks, as it reveals the subtle beauties of this vast desert land. For an active walker this challenging route is a delight as you tackle the ridges and mountains of this ancient land.Incredibly expansive views over the surrounding desert descend to narrow canyons and dry river beds, marked by gum trees and bush. Revel in camping out under breathtaking night skies, painted white with stars each night. In the daytime look out for the resident wildlife and birds that make an Australian trek such a rewarding experience. For anyone who has wanted to experience the 'real outback Australia' of their imagination trekking the Larapinta trail will not fail to deliver.
This trip is a fully supported walk: your main pack will be transported to the next campsite, where you'll find your tent and a delicious meal awaiting you at the end of each day. Experience the solitude and peace of the great Australian desert. After a week you'll come back invigorated and with a fresh insight into this unique environment. For full details download the trip notes.
