The Great Ocean Walk extends from Apollo Bay through the Great Otway National Park, to the famous Twelve Apostles near Port Campbell. Along the way it traverses some of Australia's most amazing coastal scenery, cutting through the Otway National Park where mountains and forest plunge dramatically to meet the Southern Ocean. The trail is rich with wildlife as the Otway National Park is home to over 60 threatened species, so expect to see Wallabies, Koalas, Echnida's and other iconic Australian wildlife on your hikes as well as abundant birdlife.
This walk encompasses the full length of the walking trail so you experience all of the most spectacular and remote sections of the trail, showcasing all the wonderful diversity of scenery and habitats. We have also included a 'rest day' on Day 4 with a shorter, leisurely walk with a local shipwreck historian who will bring the incredible history of this coast alive. We will also be accompanied by an Indigenous guide who join us on a section and present to us on the culture and traditions of the Aboriginal people who occupied this area for thousands of years. Both presentations are fascinating and at the end of the week you'll leave with a much richer understanding of the natural and man made history that makes this area so unique.
Accommodation
We use 3 different places to stay at as we progress from East to West, maintaining a sense of journey and cutting down time spent on transfers. Our accommodation is located in Apollo Bay, Cape Otway and Port Campbell, using a mixture of well located and comfortable beachside hotel rooms ( twinshare with ensuite) in the towns and private cabin style accommodation amid the beautiful natural environment of Cape Otway. Expect to see Koalas pass by your window and balcony each day, plus much native birdlife here!
This walk traverses the coastline of Southern Victoria with all of its ascents, descents and forested areas. The distances covered on some of the 7 consecutive hiking days exceed 20kms and walking on soft sand and rough tracks can make this tougher than the distances suggest. There are some very challenging sections throughout the walk and a reasonable level of fitness is required. Each day you'll be transferred to our accommodation bases which means you'll only have to carry your daypack.
For every person that travels with us on the Great Ocean Walk we will make a donation to the Cape Otway Centre for conservation ecology:
