The 'Land of the Blue Dragon' is full of surprises, with its heady mix of Communism, Capitalism, Confucianism and last remnants of colonialism. It also hosts an amazing diversity of scenery from the mountainous Northwest through to the flat water world of the Mekong Delta. To really experience the full flavour of this Asian gem you have to venture off the beaten track and discover life in its verdant villages and countryside. There's no better way than by bike!

Cultural diversity is the essence of the Vietnam experience. From the minority hill tribes to the north, the surreal landscape of HaLong Bay, the blend of old and new in Hanoi, colonial charms of Hue and Hoi An, beaches in the remote south and flooded fields of rice in the Mekong Delta.

Nothing says Vietnam like a bicycle and rice. Touring the countryside you get to see plenty of both. The locals stop to watch as funny looking cyclists pass by, while we marvel at their traditional farming techniques.

"As the sun drenched the rice fields in yellow light the children of the village ran along the narrow trails that divide one paddy from another. They wave big nets in front of them, constantly swinging them from side to side. It wasn't until dinner-time later that evening that these playful antics made sense; when I was confronted with a plate of freshly cooked grasshoppers, among other things, and the broad joyous smiles of my hosts. It was impossible to refuse their generosity so I limited myself to just a few and filled my plate with cat fish, greens and rice."
